01/17/2006 -- Beverly Hills Preview
The Normans have come a long way since the beginning of the year, according to
Bevely Hills Coach Ryan Franks. Defensively, we've been really solid lately. We
patched up a lot of holes on defense. Getting sweeper Tess Callner back from
injury has made a huge difference. She's physical, she's fast and is covering up
all our mistakes on defense, Franks said. Taking second place Palm Desert
Tournament helped us to develop confidence. We're learning how to fight against
a good team. Whether we have as much as much talent as them or not is not the
question. It's whether we can compete against a team that's better than us. And
now we know we can compete with anybody.

01/05/2006 -- Morningside Preview
Coach Felipe Bernal was just one point away from moving on last season. The
Morningside coach said that was how close his fourth-place girls soccer team
came to a CIF playoff berth out of a competitive Ocean League led by Santa
Monica, Culver City and Beverly Hills.
"The main thing I tell the girls is to beat your crosstown rivals so
they can feel like they are growling," said Bernal, who had plans to move
to another school if Morningside had made the playoffs.
"Last year they did that, but beating a team like Santa Monica is
tough."
With nine starters returning to his lineup and a potential standout freshman
at forward, he knows the talent and experience are there for that elusive
playoff run. The team leadership, Bernal said, is an ongoing concern, though.
Senior Heidy Torres, a three-time all-league selection, and junior Karina
Ortiz, a two-time selection, should anchor a defense that is without a
goalkeeper following the departure of sophomore Mayra Nava, who moved to Idaho.
Morningside also will be without defenders Yesenia Aguilar and Maria Murguia
this season.
Bernal hopes sophomores Elana Ruiz (13 goals, nine assists) and Yadira Juarez
(11 assists, five goals) will provide strong offense. Juarez, an all-league
selection last season, should have another forward to pass to in freshman Janely
Rodriguez.
"Janely is quick and has the potential to score 20 goals," Bernal
said. "It depends on how she faces the varsity pressure of stepping up
against other girls who are juniors and seniors."
As proof that Morningside is improving, they won the Serra Holiday Classic in
December, beating Serra in the final game. In the game, Elena Ruiz had two
assists to go along with her 10th goal of the season. Janely Rodriguez and
Lillian Ortiz also scored for Morningside.

Allison Gourvitz will direct an offense lacking the firepower of Nicole Allen
(10 goals, 5 assists to Ventura College), Payton Raffa (eight goals, 5 assists
to Santa Barbara City College) and Zoe Mosk (3 goals, 7 assists to Cal Poly SLO).
