Temecula Valley 5, Irvine University 0
Senior Jacquelyn Witz scored twice for visiting Temecula Valley (21-0-5). University finished 8-9-2.

Thousand Oaks 2, Crescenta Valley 0
Thousand Oaks, which has practically been on cruise control lately, settled nicely into Cruz control Tuesday. Freshman forward Michelle Cruz scored in the seventh minute and big sister Nicole Cruz scored in the 63rd minute to give the host Lancers a 2-0 victory over Crescenta Valley in a second-round game of the Southern Section Division II girls' soccer playoffs.
"I like playing with my sister," said Nicole Cruz, a junior forward who kicked the ball into the net while in the middle of a crowd in the goal box, following up a corner kick by teammate Rachel Morris. "We know each other, I know I try to find her, and I think she looks for me too."
The rest of the team also seeks out the sisters, and the strategy has served the Lancers well.
Michelle Cruz has 14 goals on the season and Nicole has 11, ranking the sisters 1-2 on the team in scoring.
Their latest efforts extended an unbeaten streak by the Marmonte League champion Lancers (20-4-3) to 15 games, and the victory sent them on to Thursday's quarterfinals against cross-town rival Westlake Village Westlake, a 3-1 winner over Covina South Hills.
Last season, Thousand Oaks was eliminated in the second round by eventual champion Rancho Santa Margarita Tesoro.
"It's been going great," said Michelle Cruz, who carried the ball down the right side and converted from 15 yards after taking a pass from senior halfback Katie Coulas near midfield to open the scoring. "I've definitely been happy with the way things have gone."
The Lancers have shown resilience by rebounding from a midseason drop-off while Coach Geoff Raives was suspended for nine games for violating the Southern Section's association rule by coaching a Thousand Oaks junior-varsity player in club soccer.
After opening the season with six consecutive victories, the Lancers went 4-4-1 while Raives sat out, but they have recovered nicely down the stretch.
"It just took a lot of determination and hard work. But we played through it," Michelle Cruz said.
The Cruz sisters have been instrumental in turning around the Lancers' fortunes.
Nicole started the season playing sweeper, but since requesting a move to the front line, there have been five games in which the Lancers have received goals from both sisters.
"I thought I'd be more involved and could contribute more, and I wanted to play with my sister," said Nicole, who has been ably replaced on the back line by senior Candace Queen. "We were down for a little while, but now we're just trying to keep the momentum going."
The sisters have contributed contrasting styles to Thousand Oaks' success.
Michelle, invited to a U.S. under-15 national-team camp in January at the Home Depot Center, is a technically skilled player who relies on speed, footwork and ball-handling. Nicole is a hard-charging, physical player who constantly pushes forward without getting pushed around.
"They're kind of intimidating when they're out there. I think that's the best word to describe it," Raives said. "They keep coming at you, and they just have a real presence."
Crescenta Valley (15-6-3) certainly felt it, and could find no answer to the Lancers' 1-2 punch.
"We call them 'Cruz Control,'" said Thousand Oaks goalkeeper Laura Brain, who made seven saves in the shutout. "They're a very good combination."
